DOT ELD Rule

Section 32301(b) of the Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Enhancement Act, enacted as part of MAP-21, (Pub. L. 112-141, 126 Stat. 405, 786-788, July 6, 2012), mandates the Electronic Logging Device (ELD) Rule. The Rule calls for the Secretary of Transportation to adopt regulations requiring ELD use in commercial motor vehicles involved in interstate commerce, when operated by drivers who are required to keep records of duty status (RODS). As of December 18, 2017, affected commercial transport companies and motor vehicles currently maintaining driving records via paper logs will need to convert to ELDs, devices that will automatically record driving time as opposed to drivers having to maintain logs of their activities in writing. The intended goal of the ELD rule is to decrease fatigued driving by commercial truck drivers, reduce the number of crashes, injuries, and highway fatalities involving commercial trucks and buses.

The ELD Rule includes all technical specifications that ELD providers must follow for their device to be considered a compliant ELD.
